The Tenth International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction (HAI 2022) aims to be the premier interdisciplinary venue for discussing and disseminating state-of-the-art research and results that have implications across conventional interaction boundaries including robots, software agents and digitally-mediated human-human communication. HAI will gather researchers from fields spanning engineering, computer science, psychology and sociology, and will cover diverse topics, including: human-robot interaction, affective computing, computer-supported collaborative work, gaming and serious games, artificial intelligence, and more.
The theme for the HAI2022 conference will be “Real-Virtuality: Merging the Physical and Digital worlds”. Indeed, during the past two years a lot of the interactions moved online; this year, hybrid interactions are becoming possible. This regain of the virtual world combined with advances in robotics and embodied intelligence offers new opportunities for researchers to explore the connections between the physical and digital realm. Agents, avatars and robots that can mediate and extend the human’s capabilities allowing a seamless continuum between metaverse and real world. While all submissions related to HAI are welcome, you are especially encouraged to submit papers in line with the theme for HAI 2022. The HAI conference seeks contributions from a broad range of disciplines such as engineering, computer science, psychology, sociology, cognitive science, business, marketing and design. We hope to be a venue to connect these diverse areas, even though the conference will be online.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- studies of Human-Agent Interaction, with quantitative/qualitative results;
- theoretical models;
- technological advances;
- experimental methods;
- impacts of embodiment;
- character and avatar design; and
- agents in applications, e.g. self-driving cars, social networks.

- autonomous and adaptive agents/systems
COVID RESPONSE
The HAI2022 conference acknowledges the importance of face-to-face meetings. The time has come to meet in person again. The conference format will emphasize opportunities for researchers to meet and discuss their work. This means that at least one author per paper needs to register and attend the conference. We will consider medical exemptions. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will reserve the right to move the whole conference online.
PAPER SUBMISSIONS
Submission Details and Format:
Submission length is up to 8 pages (+ extra pages for references only).
HAI 2022 will accept ONLY online submissions of PDF files (no MS Word, Latex, etc.). All submissions will be reviewed by three reviewers and will receive a meta review for quality assurance. The paper will be evaluated on the basis of research originality, excellence, and significance, and relevance to HAI. We also invite position papers, preliminary (but high impact) studies, and concept papers.
All papers need to be in the ACM SIGCHI format (https://www.acm.org/publications/taps/word-template-workflow). Please visit the submission page at the HAI 2022 Web site to prepare and submit your papers. All accepted papers will be archived in the ACM Digital Library.

POSTER SUBMISSIONS
We invite researchers to submit posters to be displayed during the poster session of the HAI 2022 conference, which will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand from 5 to 8 December. We seek contributions from a broad range of disciplines such as engineering, computer science, psychology, sociology, cognitive science, business, advertising/marketing and design.
Paper Length: up to 2 pages (excluding references). All papers MUST be in the ACM Conference Paper format; be sure to leave the ACM copyright area blank. This area will be changed in accordance with the ACM publication process (including conference name, ISSN, etc.). See Submissions page for details about anonymization.
Please note that in submitting their work, authors automatically commit to be a reviewer for the poster submissions. Authors will be asked to indicate their area(s) of expertise when submitting their work, and may be asked to serve as a reviewer for posters that fall into their area.
All poster submissions will be reviewed by at least two reviewers, who will be composed of other authors and PC members, for quality assurance. Posters will be evaluated on the basis of research originality, significance, and relevance to HAI.
Authors of accepted posters are required to show their work as a poster during the poster session (either virtual or in person). Please note that your poster must be no larger than an A0.

WORKSHOP/ TUTORIAL SUBMISSIONS
We invite proposals for workshops and tutorials to be held at the HAI 2022 Conference in Christchurch, New Zealand, 5-8 December 2022. The workshop and tutorial sessions aim to provide an opportunity to discuss current and emergent topics on Human-Agent Interaction. The HAI conference seeks relevant proposals from a broad range of disciplines such as engineering, computer science, psychology, human-computer interaction, sociology, cognitive science, design, social sciences, humanities, ethics and philosophy and business/marketing.
Topics of workshops/tutorials include, but are not limited to:
- studies of HAI with a quantitative/qualitative or a mixed-method approach, across a wide variety of application areas, e.g., health, public spaces, retail.
- technological advances in HAI
- experimental methods for the evaluation of HAI
- “in the wild” field studies for the evaluation of HAI
- impact of embodiment
- character and avatar design
- agents in social networks
- agents in computer games
- affective computing
- art and technology
- design approaches
- innovative research methods
- long-term studies involving HAI
We welcome both full and half day workshops and tutorials that bridge the gap between theoretical advances and innovative applications of Human-Agent Interaction.
Please note: Tutorials are conceptually different to workshops. Tutorials are given by expert instructors, typically with established reputations, teaching people new to a topic. Workshops are meetings of experts exploring new knowledge.
Submission Guidelines and Format:
Workshop and tutorial proposals will be reviewed by the track chairs and will be assessed based on their relevance, quality, and interests to the community. Each proposals should outline the following in their proposals:
- Title
- Overview
- Goals and Objectives
- Workshop/Tutorial Structure
- Expected Outcomes
- Expected Audience and Call for Papers plan
- Any special requirements needed regarding the logistics (e.g. poster stands, more than one projector), if applicable.
- Organisers’ list (with biographies)

The HAI2022 conference is organized in collaboration with the University of Canterbury AI Conference that will take place on 9 December 2022. Please consider attending/contributing to the UC AI conference.
UC AI is a newly-formed transdisciplinary cluster for artificial intelligence research.
