Workshop on Embodied Interaction: Theory and Practice in HCI
in conjunction with CHI 2011, Vancouver, May 8th 2011

TOPIC

An embodied perspective on interaction seeks to describe and explain how the body plays a foundational role in how human beings experience, interact with and understand computation in the world we live in. This workshop seeks to bring together a community of researchers who are creating interactive technologies based on an embodied perspective on human-computer interaction (HCI). We begin with a presentation by the organizers who will revisit the last ten years of embodied HCI research and set the stage for mini-conference style presentations of new research through paper presentations, posters, and interactivity demonstrations by the workshop participants. The workshop will enable participants to be exposed to and discuss different approaches to investigating embodiment in HCI research.

SUBMISSION

The deadline for workshop paper submissions is January 23, 2011 (EXTENDED). Acceptance notifications will be sent out February 21, 2011 (EXTENDED). The workshop will be held May 8, 2011 in Vancouver, Canada.

Participants are invited to submit a four page position paper in the CHI Extended Abstracts Format (http://chi2011.org/authors/format.html#extended-abstracts), or a two page paper and poster using the CHI Work-In-Progress format (http://chi2011.org/authors/wip.html), or a two page Interactivity proposal plus the supplement and video, using the CHI Interactivity format (http://chi2011.org/authors/interactivity/index.html).

Contributions may be outlines of theoretical position, descriptions of interpretive analysis, evaluations, techniques, methods, design concepts, or prototypes that rely on embodied interaction. Authors are to include a working definition of what they mean when they say “embodiment” or “embodied interaction.”

Participants will be welcomed from a range of disciplines including:

• Cognitive science
• Linguistics
• Philosophy
• Education
• Cognitive psychology

The organizing committee will select submissions based on the quality and contribution of the work relating to embodied interaction. Please send your submission to [email protected] by January 23 2011 (EXTENDED). One author of each accepted paper needs to register for the workshop as well as at least one day of the CHI conference.
