Technologies in Urban and Spatial Planning: Virtual Cities and Territories

Introduction

This book aims to present the state-of-the-art of the development and application of all kinds of new virtual technologies based on the use of hardware and software developed to represent and simulate virtual environments, built spaces, and buildings, and the interactions of these new technological solutions with policy making and design. 

Four main editorial objectives were drawn for the project: 

• To publish a high quality handbook that presents a comprehensive and detailed overview about the use of new technologies in urban and spatial planning and architecture
• To provide solid information that supports the use of these new technologies for assisting design and decision making
• To formulate a rationale that grounds the theory already devised on these topics
• To present, through case study applications, the use of these new technologies and of innovative methods based on them. 

Target Audience

The editors will select a group of leading scholars and practitioners who are involved in research and development of new solutions based both on hardware and software technologies to improve the capacity of representing and making effective use of virtual worlds.  Authors are invited to contribute with chapters that provide a comprehensive view of the topic of their choice, combining theoretical developments with applied results.

• Web-based services and planning 
• Public Participation 
• e-Planning 
• Data mining  
• Use of mobile technologies  
• Virtualization and visualization 
• Integration of hardware sensors and virtual reality 
• Visualization techniques 
• Virtual worlds

Submission Procedure 

The editors will ensure the necessary diversity of themes, scientific and technical backgrounds, and geographic settings in order to publish a comprehensive book that can be used as a reference both to researchers and to graduate students in the field.  All contributions will be submitted to double-blind peer-review among the scientific board of the editorial project, which will be composed by all the contributors, in a process coordinated by the editors. We will have an external evaluation of up to two independent reviewers to improve the overall quality of the book.  We invite you to submit a proposal for a contribution for this editorial project on any subject that is linked to the main topics covered by the book. The editorial board will then select the group of contributions whose authors will be later invited to submit their full contributions following the project’s calendar:

• Proposal Submission Deadline: December 31, 2011 
• Full chapter Submission: March 31, 2012 
• Review Process: April 1, 2012-June 30, 2012 
• Review Results to Authors: July 1, 2012 
• Revised Chapter Submission: August 15, 2012 
• Final Acceptance Notifications: August 30, 2012 
• Submission of Final Chapters: September 30, 2012

Authors are invited to submit an abstract for their contributions with no more than 1000 words, addressing in a concise and explicit way the research and the proposed structure of the chapter. The abstract may have figures, tables, and references following the APA (American Psychological Association) style. The abstract must be written in English on a Word 2003 document, following the traditional submission style: font Times New Roman, size 12, double spaced, with justified paragraphs. The final characteristics of the contributions will be announced later.
