Virtual reality (VR) technologies have been around for over 30 years. Recent advances in hardware and software are rapidly accelerating the possibilities for impactful uses in healthcare and health education. Immersive VR applications have been used effectively to address a range of health issues in youth and adults, including phobias, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder to name a few. It has also been shown to be an effective tool for medical education, training physicians and improving medical knowledge in both patients and the general public.
VR is transforming health care, delivering altogether new types of treatments and diagnostics, and changing how and where care is delivered. Central to this shift is its ability to deliver both standard and entirely new types of content in highly immersive and realistic ways, remotely, and tailored to a variety of clinical contexts, while deploying technologies for medical students that are more cost-effective than standard processes. We are seeking high-quality original empirical articles and review articles on the following topics (though other topics will be considered):
- Implementation of virtual reality to teach (e.g., identification of heart mummer) medical residents and nurses.
- New perspectives to employ virtual reality in facilitation for teaching and training of medical students
- The use of virtual reality to facilitate social engagement (e.g., use of virtual reality to conduct medical chart review) in the medical community
- The implementation of using virtual reality for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions in accompaniment with clinical evaluations
- The use of virtual reality to assist in treatment for the field of physical/occupational therapy (e.g., home exercise evaluations)
- Use of virtual reality to provide patient education of newly diagnosed diseases and disorders. Can include rare or uncommon diseases.
- Assessing the ability of virtual reality to provide medical education as compared to traditional training simulations during or after COVID-19.
